Adopting a dog is almost always a smart decision, regardless of who you are. When you adopt a dog from a shelter, you are giving them a wonderful new life and getting a significant amount of love that is not conditional in return.

Some of the top stars in Hollywood have spoken out about the huge effect of having a rescue dog on their lives. Recently, a star was quoted saying that giving his animal companion a permanent home was the “best decision” he had ever made.

Chris Evans is best known for his role as the superhero Captain America in the successful Marvel blockbuster film franchise. However, he became known as a real-life superhero for a boxer-mix named Dodger, whom Evans had adopted in 2017.

It all began for Evans while he was working on the set of the movie Gifted, and he noticed that the kennel they were using wasn’t just a set for the movie.

“I foolishly walked in, and I thought, ‘Are these actor dogs, or are these real up-for-adoption dogs?'” the actor told People in 2017. “And sure enough, they were, so I was walking up and down the aisles and saw this one dude, and he didn’t belong there. I snagged him, and he’s such a good dog.”

“I had no intention of rescuing a dog that day, but the minute I saw him, I knew he was coming home [with] me, “Evans wrote in an Instagram post meant to celebrate National Rescue Dog Day.

In a recent interview with BuzzFeed Celeb, Evans said that he always pictured himself adopting a young dog, like a puppy, but he never planned on taking in an older dog like Dodger. But as soon as she laid eyes on Dodger, she fell head over heels in love with him.

“Dodger was a full-grown dog,” he told BuzzFeed, saying the dog was about 2 at the time. “It wasn’t the story I had in my mind, but it ended up being the best decision of my life.”

The actor suggests that more people should consider adopting older dogs, who need homes but are sometimes ignored.

“I just think a lot of adult dogs and older dogs get overlooked, and that’s a shame,” he said. “Let’s give them some love, too.”

Even if Evans wasn’t already a dog lover, the fact that he got to play with and play with pups throughout the interview should have made it abundantly clear:

Evans had no intention of bringing a puppy home that day, but something about being on the scene inspired him. Dodger is well-liked by the actor’s followers, and he makes regular appearances on the actor’s various social media platforms.

Because Dodger has taken such a major role in Evans’ life, the guy recently had a tattoo of the dog’s name on his chest.

“I mean, that’s probably one of the purest relationships I have,” Evans said in an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in October 2020. “[Getting my tattoo of his name] didn’t take much convincing. I’ll never regret that tattoo. I’ve regretted a few in my life, not that one.”

Even though Dodger is an older dog than Evans had expected, he is still quite a handful and as playful as a young dog.

“He acts like a puppy, he’s got the energy of a puppy, he’s just such a sweetheart, he’s such a good boy,” Evans told People. “He loves dogs; he loves kids; he’s full of love.”

“God, dogs, they’re such great animals. I can’t say enough about dogs; I’m a lunatic.”

Even for wealthy and very well people, the love of a dog might be the most valuable thing they own in the entire world.

We’re glad Chris Evans found such a great family pet, and we thank him for spreading the word about how important it is to adopt dogs, especially older ones.
