Many famous golden pairings have come and gone in Hollywood. Examples include Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio, Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Lauren Bacall, and Humphrey Bogart.
But the late Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, who are currently 92 years old, must be mentioned when discussing famous storied couples.
Paul and Joanne were married from 1958 until Newman passed in 2008 at 83. Paul and Joanne were partners for 50 years while they traveled, made pictures, and raised a family.
But did you know Woodward wasn’t taken aback when she first met her future spouse?
Paul Newman and Joan Woodward
Paul Newman is one of the most adored actors and entertainers of his age. They were a classic golden Hollywood pair with Joanne Woodward.
Individuals might believe that Newman was the only shining light in the union. Joanne Woodward has had a fruitful career, garnering numerous honors and shining like the biggest and brightest Hollywood personalities.
She earned much respect for her fantastic and convincing theater, cinema, and television performances. In contrast to the numerous helpless parts frequently offered to women at the time, Joanne distinguished herself from other actresses in 1950s Hollywood by playing strong and independent characters.
Joanne Woodward was born in Thomasville, Georgia, on February 27, 1930.
When Joanne was still an adolescent, she participated in beauty pageants and attended Greenville High School in Greenville, South Carolina.
She participated in several theatrical performances while still in high school, which launched her acting career.
She portrayed Laura Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie, and when she later returned to Greenville, she portrayed Amanda Wingfield in the same show.
Las Vegas wedding
Joanne, then 25 years old, visited Greenville once more to open her first motion picture, Count Three and Pray, in 1955.
Joanne relocated to Louisiana after finishing high school and majored in drama at Louisiana State University. Later, she took a trip to New York City and performed theatrical.
It was a wise choice for Joanne to travel to New York. She first encountered Paul Newman, the man who would become her husband, in 1953.
Newman was wed to Jackie Witte, his first wife at the time.
Joanne was a substitute in the Broadway production of Picnic and had just received her degree from Louisiana State. The performance featured Newman, and there would soon be love sparks.
Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward discussed their first date with Today many years ago.
It was a humid summer day, and Newman was dressed in a seersucker suit, appearing like an “ice cream ad,” according to Joanne. He was also not perspiring.
Joanne recalled, ”I was hot, sweaty, and my hair was all stringy around my neck.”
She acknowledged that she wasn’t intrigued but that Newman eventually became drawn to her. The “extraordinarily beautiful girl” that was Joanne was all Newman could think about.
According to Newman’s memoir by Marian Edelman Borden, Woodard reportedly said:
“I hated him on sight, but he was so funny, pretty, and neat.”
Four years would pass before Newman and Woodward advanced the situation. Although they had been pals since they first met, their friendship changed after they appeared together in The Long, Hot Summer (1957).
fantastic love tale
Immediately following the 1957 shooting of The Long, Hot Summer, Newman and Jackie married. Three kids were born to the pair.
Paul and Joanne were married on January 29, 1858, a short time after their split from Jackie.
Paul and Joanne got hitched in Las Vegas and honeymooned in Europe.
Press coverage of the newlywed Hollywood personalities was insatiable.
Journalists followed the two while they were on their honeymoon, which helped them become a well-liked celebrity pair.
It began a joyous, endearing, and wonderful love tale.
Paul and Joanne settled into their 18th-century Connecticut home after their six-week honeymoon.
Joanna explained to the Daily News in 2001 that choosing to relocate to the home rather than Los Angeles was important for their marriage.
“We were never Hollywood people. We just liked it better here. It also probably helps that we always enjoyed each other’s company.” Joanne said.
1958 would also go down in history as Woodward achieved Cinematic immortality. She starred in The Three Faces of Eve, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress, and in the following year, 1969, she earned another nomination for her performance in Rachel, Rachel. Paul Newman directed the latter.
winning Academy Award
Later, she was considered for two Academy Awards nominations for Best Actress: in 1991 for Mr. & Mrs. Bridge and in 1974 for Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams.
Her spouse would become the Best Actor winner of the Academy Awards. He won it in 1987 for his performance in The Color of Money.

A well-known landmark in Hollywood is the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where thousands of actors, musicians, and other creatives have gotten stars.
But who was the first to devote themselves to the ancient walkway? You did indeed predict correctly. According to History, Joanne Woodward received her star during the formal groundbreaking ceremony on February 9, 1960.
Joanna Woodward and Paul Newman chose to raise their family in Connecticut, far from the hectic pace of Hollywood.
During a 55-year-old Clea’s conversation with Daily Mail, she discussed her mother.
She claims that her mother “was extremely ahead of her time.” She was a hands-on mother who nursed me on set as an infant and was involved in women’s liberation before it was a popular movement. In scenes, she would pause the filming and apologize, saying, “Sorry, I’ve got to feed the baby.”
Son Scott was born in 1950; girls Susan and Stephanie Kendall were born in 1953; and Paul had three children overall from his first marriage (born 1954).
The family experienced a tragic loss in 1975 when Scott died from a drug overdose following a motorcycle mishap.
Paul founded the Scott Newman Center five years afterward. It aims to inform kids about the risks associated with drug and drink abuse.
Nothing you say will make me feel better about Scott’s remorse. Following the passing of his son, Paul Newman reportedly said, “It will be with me as long as I live.
Family: Joanne Woodward
There were three girls born to Joanne. Claire Olivia, Melissa Stewart, and Ellinor Teresa were all born in 1961 (1965).
When she was younger, Melissa played a part in several TV shows and the 1990 film Mr. & Mrs. Bridge, featuring her parents.
In Connecticut, Joanne and Paul continued to enjoy a wonderful existence together.
People admired their warm-hearted relationship, and actor Liev Schreiber shared a touching tale about how they remained smitten despite being married for 40 years.
It took place when Joanne arrived on location for the 1998 film Twilight, during which he was working.
“He put his arm around my shoulder and asked, ‘Will you look at the ass on her.’ That struck me as an ideal relationship. I love the idea that a guy approaching 80 still loved his wife’s ass,” Schreiber said in an interview with Elle.
Paul and Joanne never eased down as they aged. She co-starred with her spouse in the television series Empire Falls, and from 2001 to 2005, she served as artistic director of the Westport Country Playhouse in Connecticut.
But the love tale ended in 2008, after 50 years of marriage.
Paul Newman, 83, passed away in 2008 after a battle with illness. The movie industry recognized and praised the renowned Butch Cassidy actor.
Joanne and several charities received the Newman estate after the passing of her devoted spouse.
Given that having a long and happy marriage is relatively uncommon in the entertainment industry, Joanne and Paul were one of the true golden couples of Hollywood.
The couple maintained their love for one another through humor and became well-known for participating in politics and charities while juggling work and family obligations.
Sibling raises concern
The pair also developed the well-known salad dressing Newman’s Own, all of the proceeds from which go to charity.
“They had a love of newlyweds,” family friend Bob Forrester told People about the couple. “When I would fly with him all over the world, the moment the plane landed, Paul would call Joanne, and he always said, ‘I love you,’ even after 50 years of marriage. She was his everything. They were soulmates.”
Joanne and several charities received the Newman estate after the passing of her devoted spouse.
According to Joanne, their marriage’s prosperity was fairly straightforward.
“Without concern for mockery or rejection, we could communicate with one another and tell each other anything. She stated that there was confidence, as reported by Honey Nine.
Daughter Clea discusses her mother Joanne, who is 92 years old, and how much she resembles her in an interview with the Daily Mail.
I wish I had the complexion of my mother, she said. “She’s 86, but I have more creases than she does!” Her complexion is so gorgeous, but it irritates me. But back then, she used sunblock even before it was a thing. She has never avoided wearing a hat in the weather, in my experience.
Ethan Hawke will helm a documentary about the lives and professions of Joanne and Paul; it was revealed three years ago. According to TMZ, the family has given their approval.
Hawke promised a “rare and exclusive glimpse at both actors’ careers and a complex 50-year relationship that eventually managed to beat incredible odds,” in a statement.
In 2023, Joanne Woodward
Joanna Woodward has stopped performing as of 2023. The 92-year-old provided the character of Doris in the 2013 film Lucky Them, but she hasn’t received any acting recognition since.
The renowned Actress has not been spotted publicly since 2013, and media accounts claim she is battling a serious health issue.
Woodward, according to Closer Magazine, is coping with Alzheimer’s. According to USA Today, Joanne was diagnosed in 2007, just a few days before Paul Newman received his fatal cancer diagnosis.
When Ethan Hawke’s intimate six-part docuseries about Woodward and Newman debuted in 2022, Joanne once more found herself in the limelight.
Joanne might be able to appreciate it, I hope.
In 2020, Hawke stated, ”That’s why the family wanted me to do it now.” ”They wanted it to come out while she’s still alive and can see this, to support her.”
According to Closer, Joanne Woodward resides in the Connecticut house in Westport, where her late spouse passed away in 2008 at 83.
