“Such a good mama …” ❤️
Two men working at an abandoned house in Ambergris Caye, Belize, recently heard a growl. The old couch suddenly moved, startling the employees, who looked up in amazement. Given that the house was in a wet, marshy location, the men speculated that it might be a crocodile and requested assistance from Aces Wildlife Rescue.
Rescuers discovered the noise wasn’t made by a crocodile but by a much smaller animal when they arrived.
“They don’t really sound alike, but if you’re somewhere where there might be Crocs, and you’re nervous about Crocs, and then you hear a growl right behind you, you might just think [it’s a] Croc!” an Aces spokesman told The Dodo.
A mother raccoon was attempting to keep an eye out for her young.

Mother raccoon had already left when rescuers arrived at the couch; she feared people. She remained nearby nonetheless, anticipating when she might reconnect with her young.
Rescue workers had the right knowledge.
In a Facebook post, Aces stated, “We placed the babies in a tub and stood back to let mama come and retrieve all three and carry them off one by one.”

The mother raccoon carefully removed each of her young to a nearby hiding place while reaching into the tub.
“She was outside the window before we’d even placed the box down,” the Aces representative said. “I don’t know where she took [them], but she was back within 10 minutes to grab the next one and then the one after that.”

The Aces representative emphasized the value of dialing for expert assistance if you spot a raccoon or any other wild animal in trouble.
“Think about the animal’s needs, do right by the animal, and call a professional,” the representative said.
It was very satisfying that the mother raccoon could rejoin her young in this situation because raccoons value family relationships greatly.
“She was such a good mama,” Aces wrote. “Reuniting them with her is the best outcome one could hope for in this scenario.”
