In 2006, the world sadly lost one of its most respected conservationists and television personalities when Steve Irwin, the legendary star of The Crocodile Hunter, was fatally injured by a stingray. He was known as “The Crocodile Hunter.”
Nonetheless, his legacy has gone on, both via the fans who grew up watching his wildlife shows and through his family, who have continued his crucial conservation work at the Australia Zoo, trying to protect native wildlife. In other words, his fans and his family have kept his legacy alive.

Both his children, Bindi, who is 24 years old, and Robert, who is 19, have followed in their father’s footsteps by becoming television personalities and conservationists. Even though they were both very young when Steve died, his impact can be seen and felt today.
In a recent interview, Robert Irwin addressed his unique bond with his late father, Steve, and the ritual he does each morning to honor and respect his memory.
Fans worldwide have noted that Robert Irwin strongly resembles his famous dad as he has grown older. Most photos of the teen interacting with animals at the Australia Zoo look like Steve took them.
And in other cases, Robert has even recreated some of his father’s best-known photographs, such as those of him holding a koala or feeding a crocodile.

“I’ve always been about the ocean from a young age,” Robert said. “It has always been my dad who had that strong connection to the sea.”
Robert said he is “definitely most at home when [he’s] next to the ocean” and goes out on the water every morning. And when he does, he has a little part of his dad with him: he uses Steve’s old surfboards.
“I feel very lucky I get to follow in those footsteps,” he told Adelaide Now.
Robert continued by stating that they both have a love of photography in mind. Robert regularly shares his wildlife photographs on various social media platforms and sees this practice as a unique and personal method of carrying on his father’s legacy.
“I have found it to be my way to push a conservation message and continue a mission that my dad originally started,” he said.
On social media, Robert often pays tribute to and remembers his dead dad, and he frequently follows these comments with a sentimental family photo. The most recent thing he has done is post a picture of his parents on social media to celebrate their 31st wedding anniversary.
“It was on this day 31 years ago that my parents got engaged and set in motion what would become a legacy larger than life,” he wrote.
“I love my mum and dad so much… I’m proud to be their son.”
It’s so awesome to watch Robert Irwin follow in the footsteps of his famous father! It’s wonderful to see that Robert still has a close relationship with his father, Steve, despite Steve sadly dying when Robert was only a child.
