Children born with Down syndrome are still subject to a significant societal stigma. But let’s keep our fingers crossed that those born with the illness, like Philip Donahue, can push for change!
Philip has had an amazing life and will enjoy retiring after having a successful job.
Philip Donahue, who lives in Massachusetts, has had a very exciting life. Now in his 40s, Donahue feels it is the right moment to leave his job at Market Basket and pursue other opportunities. He finally decided to call it quits after 27 years on the job and took early retirement.
Although Donahue has Down syndrome, he has never allowed his condition to influence how others see him. At 16, he got his first job at Market Basket and has been there ever since. He began his career as a supermarket bagger and eventually worked his way up to a position as a customer service representative after many years of hard labor.
Because he was renowned for constantly warmly welcoming customers and colleagues, his coworkers admired him and called him a “beloved presence.” This is because he was always kind to consumers.
Upon the employee’s retirement, his company published a touching message on their Facebook page dedicated to the employee. The text reads, “Thank you, Philip, for serving our customers in the Lowell and Tewksbury communities for 27 years! You are a fine example for us all! We wish you a very happy retirement.”
His role at Market Basket is not the only formal post he has previously held. In addition, Philip participates in the Self Advocate Advisory Council of the Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress. In addition to that, he serves on the board of the Recreational Adult Resource Association of Lowell.
In addition, he is a great athlete in the Special Olympics, where he competes in track, and he has an excellent brown belt in karate!
Philip has clearly shown how others should live their lives, and we hope that he continues to find success in all of his activities in the years to come.
