The tiny girl that Veronica and Joseph adopted and adored never said a word to them despite being found abandoned beneath a park bridge. But one evening, she walked into the couple’s bedroom and wept, “Thank you, Mom & Dad,” scaring them.
Veronica and Joseph were taking a stroll across the park together as the sky was a beautiful shade of pink. The couple discovered restorative time in nature after losing their only child to cancer.
“Should we try for another child, honey? Maybe that will change things. What do you think?” Veronica asked Joseph as they walked up to the bridge across the park.

Joseph sighed. “We can, hun,” he said. “But are you sure about it? I’m not going to rush through it. We need to be in the right mental space before considering this.”
“You’re right,” she said briefly, tears welling in her eyes. “I still miss Sammy… our little boy… How could God be so cruel and take him away?”
When Veronica sensed a pair of eyes peering at them, she was sobbing into Joseph’s shoulder and thinking of their deceased son. She quickly spotted a figure that disappeared beneath the bridge, but she wasn’t expecting what came next.
A young child was gazing at Veronica with interested huge brown eyes as she called out, “One second, honey,” wiping away her tears and looking beneath the bridge. She had filthy hands, a soiled face, and bare feet. She was dressed in a filthy dress.
“Hi there, darling,” said Veronica gently. “What are you doing here by yourself?”

The girl kept staring at her without saying anything. “Would you like us to help you with something?” asked Veronica. “My name is Veronica, and this is my husband, Joseph. What’s your name?”
The girl kept her mouth shut.
As she turned to face Joseph, Veronica sighed. “Can you get her attention? She appears terrified.
Joseph walked over to the young woman after nodding. “Hi, sweetie,” he said. “Listen, we’re starving, and we were going to have some sandwiches and hot chocolate at that cafe near the park. Would you like to join us?”
Love is the most effective treatment and has the potential to work miracles.
“Yes, sweetie,” Veronica responded, holding her hand to the youngster. “Would you like to come with us? It’s ok if you don’t want to talk. We could eat something delicious!”
The girl stepped towards Veronica after turning her head to gaze at Joseph.
“Yes,” said Veronica encouragingly. “You can hold my hand!”
After taking a few more steps in Veronica’s direction, the girl eventually clasped her hands in her own. “Wonderful, sweetie,” Veronica said, smiling softly. “Let’s go get you some food!”

After bringing the young woman to the cafe, Veronica and Joseph bought her sandwiches and a chocolate shake. Everyone around them looked at her strangely as she ate the food discreetly due to her messy appearance.
“I wonder what a little girl is doing here in such a state, honey,” Veronica murmured to Joseph. “We should get her home, but we’ll need to report to the police.”
“Let’s first get her home, hun,” suggested Joseph. “She looks like she was in trouble and hungry too.”
Veronica and Joseph carried her home to provide the young girl with a comfortable place to sleep that night. The following morning, they phoned the police and Child Protective Services, but when the investigators approached the girl, she hid behind Veronica.
“She seems to trust you,” said the social worker to Veronica. “Have you thought about fostering her? We can’t do anything if she won’t speak up, and we can tell she feels safe here.”

“We haven’t given it a thought yet,” said Joseph. “But,” he looked at Veronica and said, “I don’t think we are ready for it.”
“NO!” Veronica interrupted him, hugging the girl close to her. “We can do that. We are also certified because… well… at one point, we were considering adoption!”
“Great then,” said the worker. “You can keep the girl while we search for her parents or anyone else who knows who she is. Good luck!”
Even Veronica could not explain why she chose to keep the girl at home because she had such a strange connection with her. When the girl crouched behind her and gripped her clothing with her tiny fingers, knowing she would be safe and cuddled, she just couldn’t let the girl go.
As time passed, Veronica and Joseph developed a love for the girl that rivaled their own, and they even adopted her when her family could not be located. There was, however, one issue. Simply put, the girl was silent. She kept her opinions to herself, even when she didn’t like anything.
They took her to the doctor because they were concerned about it, and the doctor identified the girl as traumatized.

“I would describe it as a shock,” the doctor said. “Your daughter has been through a terrible ordeal and is still not out of it completely. While medical science can do wonders, I believe what your daughter requires most at this stage are love and care. As her parents, only you can do that.”
Veronica cried that night, thinking what their little angel had been through, and she decided to do everything she could to aid in her recovery.
“It’ll all be fine, honey,” Joseph consoling her. “I have an idea. I’m unsure if it’ll make a significant difference, but we can try!”
As a surprise, Joseph and Veronica prepared Milly’s chamber in the style of a princess. They redid the walls, the bed, the wardrobe, and everything else as a symbol of their recovery from Sam’s passing.
The pair showed Milly the room and said, “Surprise!”
They were disappointed when Milly failed to exhibit any excitement.

“Did you not like your room, honey?” asked Veronica. “See, it’s all about princesses! You finally have your bed too! It’s all yours! Daddy and I know how much you love princesses!”
Milly stared at them and then at the room without saying anything.
Joseph and Veronica went back to their room after being discouraged.
“I think we need to take her to a therapist,” said Joseph. “That would be the best.”
Milly entered their bedroom at that same moment. She was crying, and Joseph and Veronica were astonished to see it.
“What’s wrong, sweetie?” Veronica asked. “Are you all right?”
She said, “Thank… Sky,” Veronica and Joseph were startled to hear their daughter say it.

“Thank you, Mom & Dad. The bed… the princess… I love it!” she continued. “Can you call me Sky?”
Joseph and Veronica started crying as they held Milly. We adore you, honey,” Joseph continued. “Was Sky your previous name?”
The teenager shrugged. “The sky was pink when I met Mommy and you in the park. Hi, I’m Sky.
Veronica smiled. “Of course! Sky, you are! Not Milly! You’re Sky for us!”
Later on that day, Joseph and Veronica heard Milly/Sky’s terrible tale. She admitted that she and her birth mother had been homeless for many years and that after her mother passed away, she had traveled the streets alone and slept in alleyways, beneath bridges, and other improvised locations.
The pair broke down in tears when they heard that and hugged her. “Sky,” Veronica replied. “I remember the pink skies on that day too, honey. I think this was all meant to be.”
