Our canines begin to slow down a little as they age, but we make every effort to ensure that they are content and at ease as they approach old age.
However, one family went above and beyond for their elderly dog, changing their sleep schedules solely to ensure that he felt cherished.
Spike is an English springer spaniel who is 14 years old. Like many older canines, he has trouble moving around. He recently had another stroke, which made it challenging for him to use the steps.
Sadly, this prevented Spike from engaging in one of his favored pastimes sleeping in bed with his family, as he has done every night since he was a puppy.
“The first night we had him, we closed the stair gate and went to bed,” Spike’s owner Catherine Morris told The Dodo. “He whined for a couple of minutes before jumping over the gate in the dark and trotting up into my parents’ room and straight up onto the bed! And that’s where he slept from then on.”

Spike couldn’t get to his favorite place anymore because their bedroom was on the second story. Even though he was weak, he persisted in attempting, to the point where his family had to block off the stairs to stop him.
Instead, they devised a sweet plan: if Spike couldn’t join them upstairs, they would go downstairs and slumber with Spike.
The family members now alternately set up the pull-out couch and spend the night with Spike downstairs to ensure the senior dog still has companionship.
Since her parents and Spike have always been close, Catherine wasn’t surprised to see her parents’ new sleeping situation when she got home from university.
“They’re inseparable,” Catherine told The Dodo. “My dad calls him ‘old bean,’ and they’re always chatting away.”
“My dad will also bring Spike his water and food to the sofa and feed him by hand to ensure he gets his medicines and keeps his strength up.”
Although Spike is no longer the pup he once was, it is obvious that his family’s affection for him has not.
With this selfless deed, they demonstrate their willingness to go above and beyond to ensure Spike’s concluding years are as wonderful as possible.
“We love our old boy so much and are so glad to have him in our lives,” Catherine said. “Hopefully, we have made up for his not-so-good start in life by providing all the love in the world.”
It’s incredible how far some individuals will go to please their dogs. I appreciate this family caring for their elderly canine.
